The Last Pearly

The Last Pearly tells the story of a young boy, John, a reluctant pearly, who doesn’t want to continue in the footsteps of his grandparents the pearly king and queen of Wandleham. When his beloved grandfather dies, John embarks on a journey of discovery that takes him closer than ever to his pearly roots and helps him to find a sense of pride in his history.

The Last Pearly is a celebration of Cockney tradition which weaves together music, story telling and puppetry to bring the spirit of the Old East end to life. Sprinkled with pearly magic - a galleon full of pearls, the spirit of the Thames and the elusive pearl buttons themselves, The Last Pearly celebrates what has been and tries to keep hold of what might be lost, urging the viewer to consider the little bit of pearly in all of us.

The project began in 2010 when the creative team discovered a shared interest in the old east end and fading Cockney identity. We began to meet Pearly Kings and Queens, to attend events and witness public appearances, before interviewing individuals and hearing their stories. The project has had two previous development periods, at The Unicorn Theatre and at Rich Mix before its most recent incarnation. A full production will be presented at Rich Mix in April 2014 before embarking on a small scale tour around London and the South East.
